Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information BuildCalc (dbdigitalhub.com) collects when you use the site, how that information is used, which third parties are involved, and the choices you have. BuildCalc is operated by DB Digital Hub ("we", "us", "our").

The short version: our calculators run in your browser and we do not store what you type into them. We use self-hosted, privacy-friendly analytics that do not use cookies. We show ads served by Google AdSense, and Google and its partners use cookies to serve those ads. If you contact us, we use your message only to reply.

Information we collect

Calculator inputs

The measurements you enter into a BuildCalc calculator (room sizes, depths, quantities and so on) are processed by code that runs in your own browser. They are not sent to our server, and we do not save them.

Information you send us

If you use our contact form, we receive the name, email address and message you type. We use this information only to read and answer your message, fix a problem you report, or handle a privacy request. We do not add you to a mailing list and we do not sell or rent your contact details.

Site statistics

We use WP Statistics, an analytics plugin that runs on our own WordPress installation, to understand which pages and calculators are useful. It records information such as the pages visited, the referring website, browser and device type, and an approximate location (country or region). It does not use cookies. IP addresses are anonymized and hashed before they are stored, so the statistics cannot be used to identify you. This data stays on our own server and is not shared with the plugin's developer or any other third party.

Server and security logs

Like most websites, our web host automatically keeps standard server logs, which can include your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time of the request. These logs are used to keep the site running, diagnose errors and prevent abuse. We also use a security plugin that records the IP address of failed login attempts to the site's admin area, to block attacks.

Advertising and cookies

BuildCalc is free to use because it shows ads served by Google AdSense. Advertising cookies and similar technologies may be placed on your device when ads are shown. Specifically:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
  • Google may allow other certified ad technology providers to serve or measure ads on this site through AdSense. These providers may also use cookies.

You can opt out of personalized advertising from Google by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can opt out of some other vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting aboutads.info/choices or the Network Advertising Initiative. If you opt out, you will still see ads, but they will be less related to your interests.

Consent messages

If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will see a consent message provided by Google's consent management platform before personalized ads are used. You can accept, decline, or manage your choices there, and you can change them later through the privacy settings link shown on the site.

If you live in a US state with a consumer privacy law, such as California, you can use the "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" option provided through the same Google tool to opt out of the use of your information for personalized advertising.

Other cookies

Our analytics do not use cookies. WordPress itself sets cookies only for people who log in to manage the site. The consent tool may store a small cookie to remember your privacy choices. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the calculators will keep working if you do.

How we use information

  • To run the site and keep it secure.
  • To see which guides and calculators are used, so we can improve them and fix errors.
  • To reply to messages and handle correction or privacy requests.
  • To show ads through Google AdSense, which pays for the site.

For visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland, our legal bases are your consent (for advertising cookies), our legitimate interest in operating, securing and improving the site (for server logs and anonymized statistics), and taking steps at your request (for answering your messages).

Sharing

We do not sell your personal information for money. We share information only with the service providers needed to run the site (our web host and Google as our advertising provider, as described above), when required by law, or to protect the site and its users from fraud or abuse.

How long we keep information

We keep contact messages only as long as needed to handle your request and for reasonable record keeping, and then delete them. Anonymized statistics may be kept to compare trends over time; they do not identify you. Server and security logs are kept for a limited period set by our host and security tools.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we hold about you and get a copy of it.
  • Ask us to correct or delete it.
  • Object to or restrict certain uses, and withdraw consent you gave earlier.
  • Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for personalized advertising.
  • Not be treated differently for using any of these rights.
  • Complain to your local data protection authority if you are in the EEA, UK or Switzerland.

Because we collect very little personal information, most requests will concern messages you sent us. To make a request, use our contact page and tell us what you need. We may ask for information to confirm the request is yours. Requests about advertising data held by Google can also be made directly through Google's privacy tools linked above.

Children's privacy

BuildCalc is a home improvement resource for adults. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Our guides link to manufacturers, code publishers, government agencies and other sources. Some links may lead to stores. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for how they handle your information.

Where information is processed

Our website is hosted on servers in the United States. Google and other advertising providers may process information in the United States and other countries under their own safeguards.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page if our practices change, for example if we add a new advertising partner or affiliate program. The effective date at the top shows when it was last changed.
