Calculator results are estimates

Every BuildCalc result is an estimate. It depends on the measurements you enter and on the assumptions explained in each guide, such as a waste allowance, a typical coverage rate or a standard product size. Real projects vary. Surfaces absorb more paint than expected, rooms are not perfectly square, soil settles, products change and cuts create waste. Use our numbers as a starting point, check them against the product you are buying, and round up when running short would cost you more than a little leftover.

Not professional or engineering advice

Our content is general information for homeowners. It is not engineering, architectural, structural, electrical, legal or other professional advice, and it does not replace an on-site assessment. We do not design structures. Decks, stairs, retaining walls, block walls, roofs, foundations and anything that carries a load or protects people from falls or weather should be designed, checked or built by a qualified professional where required.

Check local codes and product labels

• Building codes: When we mention a code limit, we cite the model code it comes from. Your city or county may adopt a different edition or add its own rules. Your local building department has the final word, and many projects need a permit.
• Product labels: Coverage rates, bag yields, mixing ratios and installation requirements differ by brand and product line. Always follow the label and the manufacturer's instructions over any general figure on our site.
• Safety: Follow the safety instructions for every tool and material, wear appropriate protective equipment, and have underground utilities marked before you dig.

Accuracy and corrections

We build our formulas from manufacturer specifications, published codes and recognized industry references, and we list sources at the end of each guide. Even so, mistakes can happen and sources change. If you find an error, please tell us through our contact page and we will review it and correct the page if needed. BuildCalc shows ads served by Google; ads are chosen by the ad network, not by us, and appearing next to our content does not mean we recommend the advertiser.
